This article introduces Japanese culture from Jujutsu kaisen vol.1.
In this volume, you can get a glimpse of Japanese sweets, school culture, and the relationship between Tokyo and the countryside.
A THERMO METER SHED?!
This chapter starts with Gojo hiding the cursed object somewhere
In translation it is translated as Thmermo meter shed, but in Japan it is called “Hyakuyoubako”
It is very familiar for Japanese students. When I was a student (around 90’s), it was installed in most elementary schools. So Nothing unusual.
What are they doing ?
Quote 呪術廻戦 1巻 Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 1
Itadori and friends are playing a type of fortune-telling that originated in the Western table-turning. In translation, they called Sprits Sprits, but in the Japanese version, Itadori called a sprit named Kokkuri-san (it is type a sprit derived from fox). There are many cases where children do it for fun at school in Japan in 1970’s and it has a psychological impact on students, and teachers, including parents, often give strict warnings.
Quija is the very similar game in USA.
Why carp??
In this scene, they are pointing to C A R P, but in the Japanese version, they are pointing to “Clione” . In Japanese, Clione is four letters, so the number of letters does not match. So translator came up with the translation. but it looks strange in both ways anyway.
Popular Sweets in this Manga
This sweet has been around for a long time. It became quite famous due to the introduction of Jujutsu Kaisen. It stated to be introduced in the media a lot, but I haven’t eaten it yet.
The following site explains well what kind of sweets it is, so please check it if you like.
Nobara’s home town is…
The image above is the scene where Nobara traveled from her home town to Tokyo via Morioka. Morioka is a provincial city located in the northeastern part of Japan.
She said it took four hours to get just Morioka from her home town. It indicates that her hometown is quite a remote rural area. (That’s why she said “Finally to say good bye”)
Following map is the assumed her hometown .(the following fan Japanese site has a pretty detail assumption)
