Meaning of Midoriya Izuku’s hero name ‘DEKU’

Manga
My Hero Academia, VOL.6

The Main character of “My Hero Academia,” Midoriya Izuku, named himself “DEKU” as his Hero name. His name, Izuku, can be written in Kanji as “出久.” It can also be read as “DEKU” in Japenese. (But the word “DEKU” is a insult term in Japanese)

In this article, let me introduce the reason why the word “DEKU” in Japanese is considered a insult term, and why Midoriya chose this name for himself despite it.

What does DEKU means?

“DEKU” refers to a wooden puppet that appeared in the Heian period(AD 700 around). In addition to being a wooden doll with no emotions, “DEKU” has become a term used as a metaphor for someone who is incapable and serves no purpose.
He was always called DEKU from his childhood friend Bakugo Katsuki and he hate the nick name.

She change the meaning in a positive way

After taking the entrance exam for U.A. High School for Heroes, Midoriya became friends with Iida and Uraraka. and She took the meaning in a positive way.
There is a verb “DEKIRU” in Japenese and it means “I can do it”. So Uraka told it to Midoriya and he also stated to take it in a positive meaning.
